---Shreeve---

Summary
Shreeve insists that scientists should use the word "race" because the word has biological reality. At the point of the biological reality of "race", he shows some data of scientific experiment such as experiments dealing with DNA. Doing so, he tries to make his opinion stronger.
He shows some situations the words "race" are used. First, he shows the situation the police use the "race" to their investigation. The police use "race" just because they proceed their investigation. Second, he shows the situation the "race" are used for research. In this case, "race" is used just for getting more data. The researchers are not interested in which races should be called "better" or "worse".
Using these two situations, he proves that depending on "who" use and "how" are used, the meaning of "race" can be changed and varied.

Reaction
I see what Shreeve wants to say and what he wants to use to reason and support his opinions. However, I disagree with him at the point of the use of the word "race." I mean that scientists should not use the word "race." Some people may think that I think that "Science should be objective, so the subjective word "race" should not be used in science." However, I have different reason, and I even disagree with the generalization "Science must be objective." (I want to say more about this opinion in someday on this blog:))
My reason is more practical one than the generalization. If scientists use the word "race" which contains many meanings, they have to take time to correspond the definition of "race" to avoid confusing. Without such corresponding, their own word "race" mean so different meaning each other. This situation may cause serious confusions on their research. It seems to be the same that if driver A recognizes "blue" as the sign "Go" and driver B recognizes that as "Stop", serious accident will be caused. Having shared opinion is indispensable to proceed research smoothly.
